Titellehre
Definition
Duty to teach - in order to keep the venia legendi, i.e. the title of a "Privatdozent/in" or, after a successful period of probation, the title of a "Apl. Professor/in".
- The title of "Privatdozent/in" grants the right to teach. However, opposed to this, stands the "Titellehre", i.e. the duty to teach. Usually, this means that 2 contact hours per week have to be offered for free.
- If the the duty to teach in the respective subject wasn't exercised for a certain time (usually, for one or two years), the venia legendi can expire.
- This is also true for the "Apl. Professor/in".

Mit der Erteilung der Lehrbefugnis (venia legendi), d.h. der Befugnis zur selbständigen Lehre an der Hochschule für ein bestimmtes wissenschaftliches Fach oder Fachgebiet, ist im Regelfall das Recht zur Führung der Bezeichnung "Privatdozent/in" verbunden.
- Mit der Privatdozentur ist das Recht zu Lehren verbunden. Dem steht die Pflicht zu Lehren, d.h. in einem bestimmten Umfang selbständige Lehre anzubieten, gegenüber. Sie umfasst in der Regel zwei Semesterwochenstunden und erfolgt unentgeltlich.
- Werden im entsprechenden Fachgebiet über eine bestimmte Zeit, i.d.R. ein oder zwei Jahre, keine Lehrveranstaltungen abgehalten, kann die venia legendi erlöschen bzw. entzogen werden.
- Gilt auch für den/die Apl. Professor/in.
